Infection Prevention Week Story #2: Consumers Union

Consumers Union’s “Stop Hospital Infections Campaign” promotes the public disclosure of hospital-acquired infections. The campaign has been working with advocacy organizations (including Health Care For All) in several states to pass legislation requiring hospitals to disclose infection rates to the public. Twenty-five states, including, as of this year, Massachusetts, require such disclosure (see a map of the states with the provisions).

This is a growing movement across the country as quality improvement and cost containment move up legislatures’ priority lists. The Stop Hospital Infections Campaign has been a focal organizing point for consumer advocates and we are taking the opportunity of Infection Prevention Week to commend Consumers Union for taking the lead on this important work.
