New $40 Million National Health Care Campaign Launches

Health Care for America Now, a coalition including labor unions, large membership groups, DC think tanks, doctors, nurses, and leading online activists, is launching a $40 million campaign to push for quality, affordable health care for every American.

The campaign is being announced today with events in 52 cities. Elizabeth Edwards, wife of former Senator John Edwards, will speak at the group’s kick-off event today at the National Press Club. MoveOn.org, Planned Parenthood, the Campaign for America’s Future and SEIU are among the leading organizers of the group.

They plan to initially spend $1.5 million for national television, print and online advertisements (their first spot, to run on CNN and MSNBC, is above; their print ad is here (pdf)). They plan to pour $25 million into additional advertising through the campaign season. There will also be 100 community field organizers and a sophisticated web organizing component. Some activities are planned for Massachusetts, though the focus will be more on other states (UPDATE: more details here).
